Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel in southern Peru. The site was used as a royal retreat by ruler Pachacutec, and later Túpac, and was only inhabited for approximately 80 years. The ruins are surrounded by andenes - man-made terraces used for farming. The site is overlooked by two mountains, the smaller Huchuy Picchu, and the taller and more iconic Huayna Picchu.
After the announcement of being named one of the New Seven Wonders in 2007, the Peruvian state decided to capitalise by spending public funds to add several theme park rides in an attempt to generate additional revenue, to the outrage of virtually everybody.
The new park features several exciting rides, each of which disrupts centuries old priceless artefacts and ruins, benefiting nobody, except for uncaring thrill seekers. You will often spot protesters attending the site in an attempt to disrupt activities where possible, but the state has restricted them to a small area.
The main attraction of the park is the Huayna Picchu coaster, a giga coaster rivalling the height of the eponymous mountain. It is tastefully painted in the colours of the Peruvian national flag, and weaves its way through the ruined walls of the Machu Picchu settlement, showing guests the wonders of archaeology from new, nauseating angles.
Other rides include the Coca Brew Cups, where you can live your fantasy of being made of coca leaf tea; Sapa Inca, a mini helicopter ride in the shape of the Sapa Inca banner; Qenko, a maze ride named after an Incan cave labyrinth; Túpac Amaru’s Revolution, an enterprise ride referencing the Inca leader’s fight against the Spanish, and Huchuy Picchu’s Revenge, a roto-drop built into the mountain itself.
The park also features an iconic centrepiece, the Temple of Llamas, which although is not historically accurate, rivals the iconic castles of Disneyland, and is a great place for guests to pause and buy some refreshments. The edges are decorated by the Peru and Wiphala flag.
